Proper Cutting Board Care

Five tips for maintaining your cutting board:

  1. Cleaning: Wash your cutting board with warm, soapy water after each use. Avoid immersing wooden cutting boards in water for extended periods. Instead, quickly rinse and dry them.

  2. Sanitizing: Periodically sanitize your cutting board to remove bacteria. You can use a solution of one part vinegar to four parts water or a mild bleach solution. Rinse and dry thoroughly afterward.

  3. Avoid heat exposure: Protect your cutting board from excessive heat, such as direct contact with hot pots or pans. High temperatures can cause the wood to warp or crack.

  4. Regular oiling: Apply food-grade mineral oil or cutting board oil to wooden cutting boards to prevent them from drying out and cracking. This helps maintain their appearance and longevity. Apply the oil in the direction of the grain, allow it to soak in for a few hours or overnight, then wipe off the excess oil.

  5. Resurfacing: Over time, your cutting board may develop deep cuts or grooves. Consider resurfacing it by sanding the surface lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. Follow up with oiling to restore its smoothness.

Regarding the best oil to use, food-grade mineral oil is commonly recommended for cutting boards. It is colorless, odorless, and safe for food contact. Another option is cutting board oil, which is a mixture of mineral oil and natural waxes. Both types of oil provide good protection for wooden cutting boards.

Remember to follow the instructions on the oil product you choose and apply it periodically to keep your cutting board in excellent condition.
